Viva Voce

Writing & examination

Definition

The oral examination in which a candidate defends their thesis and research decisions before examiners.

The viva voce is the oral examination in which a candidate defends their thesis before examiners. It is where the work is tested for originality, depth of understanding and the candidate's independent ownership of it — the examiners are establishing that you can defend every decision the thesis records.

Formats vary by country and institution. In India it is frequently a public defence with a presentation followed by questions from external and internal examiners; in the UK it is usually a closed discussion with an internal and external examiner lasting one to three hours. Outcomes range from award without correction through minor or major revisions to resubmission.

Preparation that works: re-read the thesis critically and list its weaknesses before the examiners do, be able to state your contribution in two sentences, know why you chose each methodological option over the alternatives, read the examiners' recent publications, and rehearse aloud with peers. Answering a hard question with a considered acknowledgement of a limitation is far stronger than defending an indefensible choice.
