Coursework (PhD)

PhD coursework is the mandatory taught component completed in the first phase of doctoral study, before full-time research begins. UGC regulations require it for Indian doctoral programmes, and satisfactory completion is a precondition for continuing to the research stage.

It normally spans one or two semesters and covers research methodology, research and publication ethics (the RPE course is a UGC requirement), computer applications or statistical techniques, and a subject-specific paper in the candidate's area. Assessment combines examinations, assignments and seminar presentations, with a minimum grade required to pass.

Students often treat it as an administrative hurdle, which is a missed opportunity. The methodology and statistics components map directly onto the chapters you will later have to write and defend, and the review paper many programmes require can be developed into the literature review chapter or a first publication.
