Shodhganga

Writing & examination

Definition

INFLIBNET's national repository of Indian theses and dissertations — where accepted PhD theses are deposited and publicly accessible.

Shodhganga is the Indian national repository of doctoral theses, maintained by INFLIBNET under the UGC. Indian universities are required to deposit theses in it, and it now holds several hundred thousand full-text theses available to read and download without charge.

For a research student it serves two purposes. First, it is a search resource: reading completed theses in your field shows how chapters are structured, how methodology sections are written and what depth examiners in Indian universities expect. Second, it is a duplication check — confirming that your intended topic has not already been done at another Indian university.

It also functions as a plagiarism deterrent, since deposited theses are searchable and text-matching tools can compare against them. When you draw on a thesis found there, cite it as an unpublished doctoral thesis with the university name, and treat it as you would any unrefereed source: useful for method and framing, but weaker evidence than peer-reviewed literature.

Where it's used

  • Checking prior theses in your area before finalising a topic
  • Mandatory thesis deposit after award
