A synopsis is the formal research proposal submitted for approval before doctoral work begins. Most Indian universities require it for registration and review by a departmental or doctoral committee, and approval fixes the scope of the research you are authorised to carry out.
It typically runs 15 to 30 pages and covers the title, introduction and background, a concise review of literature establishing the gap, the problem statement, research questions and objectives, hypotheses where applicable, the proposed methodology (design, population, sampling, instruments, analysis plan), the expected contribution, a chapter plan, a timeline and references.
Examiners read it to judge whether the problem is significant, the gap is real and evidenced, and the method can actually deliver an answer within the available time. Objectives are the section that attracts most scrutiny: keep them specific, measurable and few, and ensure every one is matched by a method that will address it.
