The NET-score model
Under the framework UGC introduced from the 2024–25 cycle, NET results serve three purposes in one exam: JRF (fellowship + admission eligibility), assistant-professor eligibility plus PhD admission, and a PhD-admission-only category. Central universities increasingly admit directly on NET percentile plus interview, replacing their separate entrance tests (several universities retain or revive their own tests in specific programmes — the university's current notification is final). What this means practically: for the central-university route, NET preparation largely *is* PhD entrance preparation.
The interview still decides
NET gets you shortlisted; the interview/viva assessing your research aptitude and proposed direction decides selection, commonly weighted around 70:30 (test:interview) in recent frameworks. Candidates who present a focused problem area, awareness of key literature and a feasible method outline consistently outperform higher scorers with vague plans. A tight two-page research statement — built on a genuine research gap and the proposal format — is your highest-leverage preparation.
