IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences: widely used software for descriptive and inferential statistics such as t-tests, ANOVA and regression.
SPSS is a menu-driven statistical package widely used across social sciences, management and health research. Its appeal for thesis work is that the full standard analytical sequence — data screening, descriptives, reliability, t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, regression and factor analysis — is reachable without writing code.
The interface separates Data View, which holds the records, from Variable View, where measurement level, value labels and missing-value codes are defined. Setting those up properly before analysis prevents a large share of the errors that appear in thesis results chapters, particularly around reverse-coded items and missing data.
Every menu action generates syntax, and pasting that syntax into a saved file is the single most useful habit an SPSS user can build: it makes an analysis reproducible, correctable and defensible at the viva. For structural equation modelling, SPSS pairs with AMOS, and PROCESS extends it to mediation and moderation.
