Zotero is a free, open-source reference manager that captures citations from web pages, databases and PDFs with a single browser click, stores them in a searchable library, and inserts formatted citations and bibliographies into Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
It supports thousands of citation styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard and IEEE, and switching a whole document from one to another takes seconds. Attached PDFs can be annotated and highlighted inside Zotero, and notes stay linked to the reference they belong to.
For thesis work its strongest features are collections and tags for organising literature by chapter or theme, group libraries for sharing with a supervisor, and duplicate detection. Storage beyond the free tier requires a subscription, though attachments can be synced through your own cloud storage instead. Always proofread generated citations, since accuracy depends on the imported metadata.
