A small-scale trial run of instruments and procedures before main data collection — testing clarity, timing, reliability and feasibility while changes are still cheap.
A pilot study is a small-scale trial run of your instrument and procedure before full data collection. Its purpose is to surface problems while they are still cheap to fix — ambiguous item wording, a questionnaire that takes far longer than expected, technical faults, or response options that do not fit how people actually answer.
It also provides the first estimate of scale reliability. Computing Cronbach's alpha per construct on pilot data reveals items that fail to cohere, letting you revise or drop them before committing to the main study. A common guide is 30 or so respondents, or roughly 10% of the intended sample.
Report the pilot in your methodology chapter: how many participated, what problems emerged, what you changed as a result, and the reliability figures obtained. Pilot data is normally excluded from the main analysis when the instrument was modified afterwards. Examiners read a documented pilot as evidence of methodological care.
