Research Methodology Advisor

Methodology starts from your research questions, not from a preferred method. Enter the questions or objectives you are trying to answer, your discipline and any practical constraints — time, budget, access to respondents or data — and the advisor will reason from those towards a design. Questions about 'how much' or 'to what extent' usually lead to quantitative designs; questions about 'how' and 'why' people experience something usually lead to qualitative ones; and studies that need both often justify a mixed-methods design.

A defensible methodology chapter explains a chain of connected choices: research philosophy and approach, design, population and sampling technique, sample size, data-collection instrument, and analysis method. Each link has to fit the one before it. Use the advisor's recommendation as a map of that chain, and check that every objective in your synopsis has a matching method — mismatches between objectives and methods are one of the most common reasons committees send synopses back.

Finally, justify rather than describe. Examiners are rarely satisfied by 'a survey was used'; they want to know why a survey rather than interviews, why this sampling technique, and why this sample size. Support each decision with methodological literature — Creswell, Saunders, Bryman or the relevant field-specific authorities — and acknowledge the limitations the design introduces. The advisor gives you the reasoning; the citations and the final wording must be yours.
