Questionnaire Builder

Define your constructs before you generate items. The builder works best when you give it the constructs from your conceptual framework, a short definition of each, and your target respondents — for example, 'perceived organisational support, work engagement and turnover intention among nurses in private hospitals'. Clear definitions produce items that measure the construct rather than something adjacent to it.

Wherever a validated scale already exists, use it — or adapt it with citation — rather than writing new items. Examiners and reviewers trust established instruments because their reliability and validity have been demonstrated, and a thesis built on untested items has to establish both from scratch. Use the builder to find the likely source scales, to adapt wording for an Indian context, and to draft demographic and screening questions, then record where every item came from.

Before full data collection, send the draft to two or three subject experts for content validity and run a pilot with 30 to 50 respondents from your target population. Check Cronbach's alpha for each construct, look for items that respondents misread or skip, and revise ambiguous or double-barrelled wording. If you will collect data in a regional language, plan forward and back translation so that the translated items mean the same thing as the originals.
