Model Fit Indices in AMOS Explained (CFI, RMSEA, CMIN/df & More)
CMIN/df, CFI, TLI, RMSEA, SRMR — what each fit index actually measures, the thresholds examiners expect, and what to do (and not do) when your model doesn't fit.

Frequently asked
What model-fit values are acceptable in AMOS?+
Commonly cited thresholds: CMIN/df below 3, CFI and TLI at 0.90 or above (0.95 preferred), RMSEA at or below 0.08 (0.06 preferred) and SRMR at or below 0.08. Report several indices together, never one in isolation.
Do I run CFA before the structural model?+
Yes — the standard two-step approach validates the measurement model first (CFA: loadings, reliability, validity) and only then tests the structural paths. Examiners and reviewers expect this order.
