Proposal & Synopsis

Every proposal & synopsis guide on phdguide — practical, in-depth and ethical.

The proposal or synopsis is the document that gets your research approved, and approval fixes the scope of what you are authorised to do. Most rejections come down to the same weaknesses — a gap asserted rather than evidenced, objectives too vague to be answerable, or a method that could not deliver the question being asked.

These guides work through each component: establishing a defensible research gap from the literature, writing a problem statement that earns the study, framing objectives that are specific and measurable, and building a methodology section where every objective has a matching method.

In India the synopsis is usually presented to a Research Advisory Committee or departmental research committee, often with a short oral presentation, and approval is formally recorded before registration is confirmed. The committee is testing feasibility as much as originality: whether the question can be answered within the time, data access and skills you actually have. A modest, well-specified study is approved more readily than an ambitious one with no clear method.

A strong synopsis typically runs to fifteen to thirty pages and follows a predictable structure — introduction and background, review of literature, research gap, problem statement, objectives and hypotheses, methodology, chapter scheme, timeline and references. Check your university's prescribed format before you write, because committees do return synopses for deviating from it, and keep the objectives stable once approved: changing them later usually means going back to the committee.
