SCI, SCIE, SSCI, ESCI — what you're actually targeting
Web of Science's Core Collection has several indexes: SCIE (sciences), SSCI (social sciences), AHCI (arts & humanities) and ESCI (the emerging-sources tier many strong newer journals enter first). 'SCI journal' in common Indian usage almost always means SCIE. Which index you target changes the realistic journal list, the competition level and the timeline — so we settle it before shortlisting a single journal.
Every shortlisted journal is verified on Clarivate's Master Journal List — the only authoritative source — with its index, category and quartile noted, because your university's requirement may specify exactly these.
How the mentoring works
The process mirrors our Scopus mentoring with the bar raised: honest manuscript evaluation against WoS-tier expectations; journal matching across SCIE/SSCI/ESCI by scope, quartile, timeline and cost; manuscript strengthening — contribution framing, literature positioning, methods rigour, reporting standards; submission preparation; and reviewer-response mentoring through however many rounds the journal takes.
Where a paper isn't yet WoS-ready, we say so and show the gap — sometimes the right move is an ESCI or strong Scopus journal now and a WoS target for the next paper. Honest sequencing beats a year of rejections.
Scopus or Web of Science — choosing your target
For most Indian PhD requirements, Scopus or UGC-CARE indexing suffices; Web of Science matters most for academic hiring, promotions under API scoring, international collaborations and disciplines where impact factor is the currency. Many journals are indexed in both — the sweet spot when you can reach it. What is the difference between SCI, SCIE and ESCI?+
SCI was the historic elite science index; since 2020 it is fully merged into SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded). ESCI is the emerging-sources tier — genuinely Web of Science indexed, but without the established impact factors of SCIE/SSCI journals (ESCI journals now receive impact factors too). Check which your university's rules accept; many treat all Core Collection indexes equally.
Is Web of Science harder to publish in than Scopus?+
Generally yes at the SCIE/SSCI level — selection standards are stricter and competition higher, which is why these publications carry more career weight. ESCI sits closer to good Scopus journals in difficulty. The right target depends on your paper's strength and your actual requirement, which is the first thing mentoring establishes.
How do I check if a journal has a real impact factor?+
An 'impact factor' is only real if issued in Clarivate's Journal Citation Reports — verify the journal on the Master Journal List and, where possible, in JCR. Fake metrics with similar names (Global Impact Factor, Universal Impact Factor and the like) are hallmarks of predatory journals.
