Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru — PhD Admission Guide

Doctoral admission at India's highest-ranked research institution.

IISc is a research-first institution: doctoral scholars form the core of its academic population, and admission is correspondingly competitive. Programmes span the science faculty (physical, chemical, biological and mathematical sciences), the engineering faculty, and interdisciplinary centres — each admitting through department-level shortlisting and interviews.

Selection weighs research aptitude heavily: shortlisted candidates face interviews probing fundamentals in depth, and departments look for evidence of genuine research exposure — projects, theses, publications — beyond marks. Candidates who can discuss a credible research direction aligned with active IISc groups stand out.

Eligibility

  • Master's degree in science/engineering (or an exceptional bachelor's record for direct-PhD routes) with the minimum marks the current notification specifies.
  • A valid national qualification — GATE, CSIR-NET/UGC-NET, JEST, GPAT or equivalent, per department — is generally required for regular admission with scholarship.
  • Direct PhD after a four-year bachelor's degree is available in several departments for outstanding candidates, typically with a strong GATE score.
  • Sponsored and external registration categories exist for candidates from research organisations and industry, with employer NOC.

Admission process

  1. 1

    Online application

Apply through the IISc admissions portal when the notification opens, selecting departments aligned with your background and interests.

  2. 2

    Department shortlisting

Departments shortlist on academic record and national-test scores against their advertised research areas.

  3. 3

    Interview (and any department test)

The interview is the decisive stage — deep questioning on fundamentals, your master's/project work, and your proposed research direction. Some departments add a written screen.

  4. 4

    Offer & registration

Selected candidates register, complete the prescribed coursework, clear the comprehensive examination and proceed to full-time research.

Typical timeline

Admission frequency
Primarily the August session; some departments also admit in January
Typical application window
Around February–March for the August session
Interviews
Usually May–June for the August session
Programme duration
Typically 4–6 years full-time

Funding & fellowships

Admitted scholars with GATE/NET/JEST generally receive fellowships at prevailing MoE/agency rates; external fellowships (PMRF, CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR) apply per their norms. IISc's project ecosystem also funds research positions that can lead into the PhD.

Always verify with the official notification. Admission notifications, department-wise eligibility and interview schedules are published on the IISc admissions portal (iisc.ac.in/admissions) each cycle. Details — dates, tests, weightages, fees — change between cycles; this guide explains the stable pattern so the notification makes sense when you read it.

Frequently asked

Is IISc only for science students?+

No — the engineering faculty is as large as the science faculty, and interdisciplinary centres span computation, energy, climate, neuroscience and management-adjacent research. Check the department list against your background before assuming fit.

How competitive is IISc PhD admission?+

Among the most competitive in India — but competition is department-specific, and interviews reward depth over polish. Strong fundamentals plus genuine research exposure beat a marginally higher CGPA without them.

Can I join IISc's PhD directly after B.Tech/BSc?+

Several departments admit outstanding four-year-degree holders directly into the PhD, usually expecting an excellent record and strong GATE/JEST performance. The programme then includes additional coursework.
