Indian Institute of Management Bangalore — PhD Admission Guide

The fully funded doctoral programme (PhD) at IIM Bangalore.

IIM Bangalore's doctoral programme trains researchers for academic careers in management, admitting a small cohort each year across areas including Strategy, Economics, Finance & Accounting, Marketing, OB & HRM, Decision Sciences, Information Systems, Production & Operations, Public Policy and Entrepreneurship.

The programme is residential and fully funded — admitted scholars pay no tuition and receive a monthly stipend plus contingency and conference support. Selection screens for research potential: strong academics, a credible statement of purpose, and an interview (often with an area-specific test) probing analytical ability and motivation for an academic career.

Eligibility

  • A master's degree (or equivalent, e.g. CA/ICWA/CS with a bachelor's) in any discipline with the minimum marks specified, or a four-year bachelor's degree with a strong record, per the current notification.
  • A valid standard test score — CAT, GMAT, GRE, or UGC-NET/CSIR-NET JRF in a relevant subject (area-specific alternatives such as GATE apply for some areas).
  • Final-year master's students may apply subject to completing requirements before joining.
  • No work-experience requirement — though research exposure strengthens the application materially.

Funding & fellowships

Full funding for every admitted scholar: tuition waiver, monthly fellowship for the programme's normal duration, contingency grants, and support for international conference travel and exchange terms — comparable across the older IIMs.

Always verify with the official notification. The doctoral admission notification, area-wise requirements and test-score criteria are published on iimb.ac.in under the PhD programme pages each cycle. Details — dates, tests, weightages, fees — change between cycles; this guide explains the stable pattern so the notification makes sense when you read it.

Frequently asked

Do I need an MBA for the IIM Bangalore PhD?+

No — any master's (or a strong four-year bachelor's) in a relevant discipline qualifies. Economics, engineering, statistics, commerce and psychology backgrounds are all common in doctoral cohorts, depending on the area.

Is the IIM PhD really fully funded?+

Yes — tuition is waived and scholars receive a monthly stipend plus contingency and conference support for the programme's normal duration. It is designed so scholars research full-time without external employment.

Which test should I take — CAT, GMAT, GRE or NET?+

Whichever your target area accepts and you can score best in. NET-JRF has the added advantage of bringing its own fellowship. Check the area-wise test matrix in the current notification before booking anything.
